The Driskill

Cattle baron Colonel Jesse Driskill built his hotel in 1886 to serve as the Frontier Palace of the South in Texas' capital city. Constructed in the Richardsonian Romanesque style from local brick and limestone, the hotel is characterized by arched windows, spacious balconies and elaborate ornamentation. The hotel's most spectacular architectural features are floor-to-ceiling arched doorways located at each entrance. Busts of Driskill and his two sons are placed high atop each entrance along with stylized heads of Texas longhorn steers. For more than a century, The Driskill has played host to dignitaries and heads of state, to lobbyists, legislators and opportunists, as well as to rising socialites, honeymooners and travelers just passing through.
